After an amazing first impression of playing Star Wars Legion, I wanted to jump in and summarize the pricing research I did. Included are lists of the cheapest and easiest ways to get into Star Wars Legion. It is not a perfect guide, but it is a cost-effective breakdown of each of the 5 current factions you can get. Also included are images of fun ways to build these lists as well. These are built using the Fifth Trooper free tool and included as a simple guide for you to match.
Also as a rule most armies work best with 9-10 activations. This helps prevent larger activation lists from just winning due to more.
Rebellion
The current rebellion battle force Echo Base Defenders is a good start. While it is not the best Meta rebels list, it does have an 800-point force already built into it. With only one exception on this list, each battle force gives an already premade 800-point army to you. However, just saying this is the best way isn’t fun, let’s build off this list.
Luke Skywalker is a staple of Rebel lists and only costs $18 at most online retailers. Wookie Warriors are good heavy hitters that will add punch to any army for $35. If you’re a fan of Andor you can also pick up Cassian for $18 as well.
Empire
Unfortunately, the empire is in a very unbalanced state right now. Fortunately, the reason they are unbalanced is also the cheapest way to get into playing them. The Blizzard force box set only needs a few more Stormtrooper minis and some extra speeders to be part of the current Meta. But I suggest avoiding that for now. Chasing a changing meta is never a good thing and will drive away players.
However, to make an interesting Empire Army, I would suggest buying the Inferno Squad box set. It is around $32 dollars it gives you a powerful unit. It is also a fun lore reference to a game that was shut down after it was finally getting the right updates.
Separatist Alliance
The separatist battle force is the definition of a cheap start. With over 50 minis, you get a lot of bang for your buck. And I don’t blame you for stopping here and buying it, because if you are a droid lover like me that’s what you did. For a more fun list, just buy 2 boxes of B-1s, and a Tactical droid, $32 and $18 respectively you get a fun spam army that’s worth playing.
I don’t have a ton more to add, unfortunately, as this is the easiest thing to recommend.
Galactic Republic
Now, this battle force is odd, as it doesn’t really add up to 800 points in the way that the others do. You can do it, however, the force you are left with will have a harder time than the rest on this list. This can be fixed by adding Captain Rex for 18$ to have a two-hero list and some extra synergies. Removing Anakin and picking up extra clones isn’t a bad idea either, and this set combined with the core Clone Wars box gives a lot of options to you.
Shadow Collective
This is the odd one as the battle force is only $60, and you get a full army with list-building options by just buying 2 of them. Maul, the only named character of note, has two different load-outs you can build him with so it makes sense to do this on multiple levels. To add to the army, Gar Saxon and Cad Bane are both $18 and definitely add value to this army.
Before buying other characters I recommend getting two of these sets. This has you end up with an 8-10 activation playable list. Below is a version I have had some fun with in a non-meta environment.
A Cheap Good Wargame
The more I play Star Wars Legion the more I realize that it is not perfect. It has an odd sense of flow to me after so much 40k. However, there are a lot of balance issues. Issues with a meta that has favored the Empire since release. There is a bad taste to an extent left in my mouth after going against so many Blizzard Force boxes already. I do like It, however, time will tell if it stays in my current rotation of Tabletop Games.
